Biomechanics is a great way to engage a wide range of audiences in Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics (STEAM). I've had such a great time teaching and mentoring K-12 and undergraduate students. This page highlights some resources and examples of my work in STEAM education.

STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Please see this link for my lab website for outreach events while at Stevens Institute of Technology (and educational curricula at the bottom of this page).

RUSH UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER OUTREACH

As a lab director at Rush University Medical Center (RUMC), I inaugurated National Biomechanics Day (NBD) events at least twice a year. We brought together different lab groups at Rush University Medical Center and partnered with external institutions such as Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. I’m happy to share that RUMC has not only continued, but has grown efforts towards NBD after my departure with leadership from my former lab manager, Christopher Knowlton and PhD student Jade He.

NSF GK-12 BODY ENGINEERING LOS ANGELES (AWARD #1045595)

During my PhD studies, I was a fellow of a NSF-USC funded program. At this capacity, I worked with teachers to enrich the STEAM curriculum in a middle school comprised of 100% economically disadvantaged students (Los Angeles Unified School District Report, 2011/12). We used a guided experiential learning approach through each of the major phases of learning: exposure, experience, expertise, and embedding (Farkas et al. 2003). Above, you will find examples of middle school student work through open-ended design challenges, and hands-on labs. (For more information about this fellowship program, click here)

"INSPIRED MOVEMENT" CLASS AT LINEAGE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

The video below provides personal testimony from a participant of Lineage Performing Arts Center’s outreach class for people who have been affected by Stroke or Parkinson's Disease. I have had the great opportunity to volunteer at Lineage as a dancer and teacher, and the honor to participate in the "inspired movement" class.

DANCE WITH NEWTON'S LAWS

As part of USC's 2012 Science Film Competition, I co-directed this film and use it during STEAM outreach events as a primer for biomechanics/ physics lessons.

BALLET-OLOGY: Physics of Ballet

I was a scriptwriter and science consultant for Super Deluxe (3.1M views).
